COUPLES

What’s Included:

Many therapists feel uncertain about working with couples, often imagining it to be more challenging or confrontational than individual therapy. In reality, once you understand relational dynamics, it becomes straightforward to adapt your existing therapeutic skills to support two people in the room. This CPD Masterclass gives you a clear understanding of how relationships function, the issues couples commonly present with, and the interventions that help move them toward clarity, communication and change. You’ll learn how to structure sessions, manage dual consultations and guide couples through conflict toward individual and relational growth.

You’ll explore:

  • Therapies used
Approaches and models that integrate effectively into couples work.

  • Understanding relationships
How relationships form, develop and become strained, and the dynamics that underpin connection and conflict.

  • Common relationship problems
Communication difficulties, intimacy issues, sexual concerns, trust and infidelity, and dynamics involving conflict, volatility or abuse.

  • The psycho‑biology of gender
How gendered patterns, expectations and neurobiology influence relational behaviour.

  • Structure of consultations
How to organise sessions, manage time, and maintain balance between partners.

  • Handling the initial dual consultations
How to gather information, establish rapport and understand each partner’s perspective safely and fairly.

  • Assessing readiness to change
Identifying motivation, ambivalence, resistance and the couple’s capacity for therapeutic progress.

  • Moving the process of therapy on
How to shift from problem‑saturated narratives to constructive, solution‑focused work.

  • Analysing conflicts
Using structured methods to clarify misunderstandings, identify patterns and reveal unmet needs.

  • Information gathering
Exploring conflicts, relationship models, perceptual styles and each partner’s internal logic.

  • Deciding on outcomes
Helping couples define realistic goals, shared intentions and individual needs.

  • Dual interventions
Contextual reframing, sequence disruption, semantic challenges and other techniques for shifting entrenched patterns.

  • NLP and hypnotherapeutic interventions
Approaches that support emotional regulation, communication, empathy and behavioural change.

  • Homework assignments for clients
Structured tasks that reinforce progress and encourage new relational behaviours.

  • Case studies
Realistic examples illustrating dynamics, interventions and therapeutic outcomes.
